The accolades continue to accumulate for Bolles Sophomore sensation Caitlin Collier as she finished 5th in the adidas Boost Boston Games Dream 1500 this evening in 4:19.05. Caitlin's time is presently US #6.

Already the State leader in the 800 and 1600m, Collier's converted time has rocketed her to the fastest time ever recorded for a Florida prep that we know of.  Her 4:19.05 converts to 4:38.09 for the 1600m and 4:39.7 for 1 Mile.

Earlier this season, Collier quailfied for the Dream 1500 by winning the adidas Dream Mile Qualifier at the Raleigh Relays in 4:46.63.  Caitlin later set the FHSAA State meet record in the 800m at the 2A Championships going 2:06.74.

According to Coach Dearing, Caitlin split 68.9, 69.6, 69.4 and closed the last 300m in 50.6.

Lake Braddock's Kate Murphy won the stacked the race easily in an Olympic Trials Qualifying time in an impressive US #3 all-time 4:07.21.

Transcript of our discussion - edited for clarity

Doctor Bob: Good evening everybody. It's Doctor Bob and what a special, special occasion for all of our listeners tonight. On the phone with me, the super sophomore sensation out of Bolles High School, Caitlin Collier.  Let me tell you a little bit about Caitlin this evening. The fastest time ever for a Florida miler as a prep, as far as we know, the first girl to go under 4:40, as she ended up 5th in the Adidas Boston Dream Mile, the Boost Games up in Boston running the 1500. Caitlin, good evening. And how are you doing?

Caitlin: I'm doing well, thanks.

Doctor Bob: 4:19.05 Caitlin. That converts to 4:38.9 for the 1600 and 4:39.7 for the full mile. The first time a Florida girl, as far as we know, has ever gone under 4:40. Tell us about your race and the prep leading up to it, and what made you go so, so fast this evening in an absolutely stacked race?

Caitlin: Well, having to race the stacked really did help. Honestly, before the race, all we were really focusing on, we knew we had training under our belt and so we were just really focusing on the mentality going into it and the nerves and just getting calm and telling ourselves that we are running through the race and that whatever goes down goes down and just go up there and give it our hardest.

Doctor Bob: We saw some splits from Coach Dearing. You took it out, ran it pretty even as far as we can tell right around 70 seconds a lap.  Was that a part of the game plan, to run an even pace and try and go as fast as you could and stay with those girls as long as you could?

Caitlin: Definitely. On the first lap, the ideal scenario would have been to run a 67 split in the first 400 and then Coach Dearing wanted me to come back in 70 and in 70 and then try to do a 50 for the last 300. So, taking it out I think I hit like a 68, 69 for the first lap.  So from there on I just tried to hold on to the times and spoke through the whole race.

Doctor Bob: An absolutely stacked race like we mentioned. The winning time for Kate Murphy out of Lake Braddock, 4:07:21. About the third fastest 1500 time ever and she would probably have won the Pro Race that followed on after that if she had been in that field.

Caitlin: Yes.

Doctor Bob: So, for the first time really, I think you saw a field, other than maybe the Adidas Raleigh Relays where you didn't have to do all the work and you didn't have to sit and rely on your kick. You got into a true, honest race. Take us through the race a little bit and what you were thinking, as you're clicking off those 70s and you were right around 3rd or 4th right in the mix.

Caitlin: Okay, so in the beginning of the race, I just wanted to really focus on not getting boxed in or anything. So I just sort of hung out, somewhere in the side of lane 2 to and at that point I just kept on going through and I looked at the girls in front of me and tried to pick them off . So at that point, I just kept on telling myself to look ahead and to pick off girls one by one and I was just really trying to focus on running my own race this time and because I knew these girls are really good and so it was really just focusing on our race this time and trying to keep our head up.

Doctor Bob: Compare this race to the one where you won up in North Carolina, the Raleigh Relays?

Caitlin: Okay, so at that point, we didn't have a lot of training under our belt. So going into there, I felt like I had a lot more pressure on me just knowing that I was racing to trying to win it and qualify fo the Dream Mile. So I was thinking that was my only opportunity at that point so,  I had a lot more pressure in this race. I wasn't racing to win it or anything, so it was just to go in and try my hardest.

Doctor Bob: When you found out that Adidas was going to go from a Dream Mile down to an Olympic qualifier in the 1500, did that affect your mindset at all?

Caitlin: Honestly, I mean, it really didn't. You think it would but I was just trying to focus on my own race this time. Coach Dearing, he knows all the stats, so he knew what I was going to get into but I try not to focus on it. I just thought maybe I can go out there, run my own race and if I stick with them, great and if I don't, it's fine too, whatever way the race goes, it goes.

Doctor Bob: Well, the state meet was several weeks ago. We saw you at the state meet get the triple, 2:06:74 setting a new state meet record in the 800 Caitlin. What do you have on top? You're going out to California, you're going to race the 800, tell us what the mindset is there?

Caitlin: Our workouts and stuff, we've been getting progressively faster and I'm looking forward to the 800  just to see what time I really can run against such great competition that I hope will push me through.   I'm definitely looking for a PR next weekend, and  honestly that's going to be just another experience. It's nice to get into these big races since I haven't had many big races like the Dream Mile before so just to get used to it now.

Doctor Bob: At the state meet, we saw you split right around 60, 61. What's the goal for next week, at USA Juniors in California?

Caitlin: We're looking for closely even splits, so I say about 61 or 60 or 62, around that area. I think  Coach Dearing's looking at 2:04 or 2:03 maybe.

Doctor Bob: Well, from what we saw this evening and looking back at some of your previous races, I think you're right there. So it's going to be fun to see how you progress and how it turns out next week at USA Juniors. We wish you all the best with that race, but you're only a sophomore. You still have a couple of years, I assume at the high school level?  What do you really want to do, before it's all been said and done, there are Bolles?

Caitlin: That's a good question. So, you're right, I'm only sophomore, two more years of high school.  I definitely want to get low-- I want to hit two flat at one point, that's definitely I think every 800 runners dream. Definitely breaking two flat would be ideal. That would be amazing. So, since that's my favorite race, that's what I'd mostly want to focus on, I guess. But from here on, I just want to keep on PR'ing and then pushing my limits and seeing how fast I can get.

Doctor Bob: Well, the world's an oyster out there there and you're on a great trajectory right now. One last question and we'll get you out of here and on to dinner with your family to do a little bit of celebrating up there in Boston. Caitlin, what did you learn about yourself from this experience at the Dream Mile, the Dream 1500 at the Adidas Boost Boston Games?

Caitlin: Well, it definitely showed you that you're everyday that I'm working hard, someone else is working just as hard, if not even harder, and that going into the race, I mean, you have to put yourself in the mindset that you can win but it just shows that there are other girls out there who are very talented and that honestly training's not going to end until even when you're at that point. Even when you're winning, you can't stop because there's always going to be someone out there trying to get you.

Doctor Bob: Very well said. Well, you're the fastest Floridian prep miler that we've ever seen. Fifth today, 4:19.05, that converts to less than 4:40 any way you cut it. Congratulations on a great season, it's not quite done yet. We'll be following along at USA Juniors next week and best of luck. Have a great week of training and maybe we'll talk to you again next week.

Caitlin: Awesome, thank you so much.

Doctor Bob: Ladies and gentlemen, my guest this evening, from Boston, she was fifth overall in the Dream Mile, 4:19:05, Caitlin Collier out of Bolles. Good evening everybody, follow along, It's a busy weekend on the DyeStat Hubs. We've got a bunch meets going across the nation, New Balance Nationals, Brooks PR, the Jamaican National Trials and today, we saw the distance events at the Boost Boston Games , the Dream 100s coming up tomorrow. Good night everybody. Good night Canada.
