More Olympic Medalists to Headline Somerville Event on June 2

BOSTON, Mass. (May 26, 2017)—Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain, a four-time Olympic medalist including gold in 2008, will lead a packed field of 400-meter stars on Friday evening, June 2, at the second-annual adidas Boost Boston Games distance festival at Dilboy Memorial Stadium, organizers have announced.

Tickets for the Somerville event, at $10, are available at www.adidasboostboston.com, and will again include a post-race barbecue where fans can get autographs and selfies with world-class athletes. The first 1,000 ticket-buyers will also receive a free T-shirt. The event begins at 5 p.m.

Among the other stars in the 400-meter field are Francena McCorory of the USA, the defending champion here and a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 4x400-meter relay; Jessica Beard of the USA, a two-time World Champion in the 4x400-meter relay; and Novlene Williams-Mills of Jamaica, a 2015 World Champion in the 4x400-meter relay.

Three more Olympic medalists are late additions to the Somerville lineup. Michael Tinsley of the USA and Javier Culson of Puerto Rico, the 2012 Olympic silver and bronze medalists, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles, and Paul Chelimo on the USA, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist at 5000 meters.

Also joining the field, in the women’s 1500 meters, is Gabe Grunewald, a 2014 USA Indoor Champion. Grunewald underwent major surgery last summer for a recurrence of cancer, and recently announced that she will soon undergo chemotherapy. She will run here as part of her quest to compete in the U.S. championships later this month.

They join a previously announced trio of top Americans: Drew Hunter of the USA, who in 2016 broke Alan Webb’s high school record in the mile; Donavan Brazier of the USA, the 2016 NCAA Champion and American Junior Record holder at 800 meters; and Charlene Lipsey, the 2017 USA Indoor Champion at 1000 meters. Also returning is Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia, who last year here ran one of the fastest 5000-meter races ever on U.S. soil.

Fans will again be invited to line the track for the distance races before heading to the barbecue.

Previously announced athletes Nick Willis and Ajeé Wilson have withdrawn from the event.

The Somerville event will be followed on Sunday, June 4, by the adidas Boost Boston Games “street meet” on Charles Street in Boston, to be held on a 200-meter track erected  between the Public Garden and Boston Common. Six Olympic gold medalists—Wayde van Niekerk, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Tori Bowie, Jeff Henderson, Sally Pearson and Jenn Suhr—are among the stars set for that event.

The adidas Boost Boston Games, produced by Boston-based Global Athletics and Marketing, Inc., features both a fan-friendly track event in Somerville on Friday, June 2 and, in Boston, a “street meet” on Sunday, June 4. The street meet, which will include highlights of Dilboy action, will be broadcast live on NBCSN on June 4 from 4-6 p.m. More on the adidas Boost Boston Games, which is part of the 2017 USATF Championship Series, is available at www.adidasBoostBoston.com; on Facebook at adidasBoostBostonGames; on Twitter at @adidasBoostBos; and on Instagram at adidasBoostBostonGames.
