Newly-crowned Commonwealth Games sprints champions confirmed for adidas Boost Boston Games

BOSTON, Mass. (April 19, 2018) – With one month to go until the adidas Boost Boston Games, a host of newly-crowned Commonwealth Games champions and medalists has been confirmed for the two-day track festival in the heart of Boston on May 19-20, organizers announced today.

The 100 meters, which form part of the “street meet” on May 20 on Charles Street, will be headlined by South Africa’s Akani Simbine, who took gold at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, this month. He will face stiff competitions in the form of Jamaica’s 2011 world 100 meters champion Yohan Blake and 2017 world 4x100 meters champion Zharnel Hughesof Great Britain.

The women’s 100m will see Michelle-Lee Ahye go head-to-head with reigning world champion Tori Bowie. Ahye made history this month when she became the first female competitor from Trinidad and Tobago to win a Commonwealth gold medal. Joining the stellar sprint line-up will be 100 meters hurdles world record holder Keni Harrison. The recent 60 meters hurdles world indoor champion will swap hurdles for the straight in an early season speed test.

In the men’s 200 meters, Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards is seeking to continue his fine form that saw him take the Commonwealth crown in a dramatic final. The 24-year-old, who won 200 meters bronze as well as 4x400 meters relay gold at last year’s IAAF World Championships in London lines up against the likes of Steven Gardiner, who recently ran 19.75 to set a new Bahamian record at 200 meters.

Meanwhile on Saturday, May 19, Olympians and world-class middle-distance runners – led by 5000 meters world champion Muktar Edris and two-time 800 meters world indoor silver and outdoor bronze medalist Ajee’ Wilson – will descend on the Henry G. Steinbrenner Stadium on the campus of MIT to contest distances from 800 meters to 5000 meters.

Ethiopian Edris cemented his status as one of the world’s best distance runners when he stormed to an upset victory over 5000 meters at last year’s IAAF World Championships to spoil multiple world and Olympic champion Mo Farah’s final career track race. Edris lines up against compatriots Hagos Gebrhiwet, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and 2012 Olympic silver medalist at 5000 meters Dejen Gebremeskel.

American 800 meters record holder Wilson most recently won silver at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England and will be joined by training partner and five-time NCAA champion Raevyn Rogers, while Charlene Lipsey, who also trains with Wilson and Rogers, will run in the 1500 meters. The trio formed part of the relay that broke the 4x800 meters world record at the Millrose Games in February.

More American talent will be on show in the men’s mile. Fresh from a victory in the streets of Boston for the BAA Invitational Mile, Drew Hunter will be looking to make it two for two in Boston. The former high school standout will face a strong field of national and international opposition, including two-time Olympic 1500 meters medalist Nick Willis and reigning US 1500m champion Robby Andrews.

Once again, the adidas Boys’ and Girls’ Dream Miles, highlighting the top high school milers in the nation, will feature alongside the pro races on Saturday night, while top high school sprinters will be in the spotlight at the adidas Dream 100 on Charles Street on Sunday afternoon. The first names for the adidas Dream events have already been announced and more will be revealed in the coming weeks.

In another effort to bring fans even closer to some of the world’s best track and field athletes, the adidas Boost Boston Games Youth Festival will be taking place on Copley Square over the course of the weekend. The Youth Festival is free to participate in and will consist of a mix of open events for children of any age as well as competitions for boys and girls aged 3–10 across three events: the 30 meters dash, 30 meters hurdles and a long jump. All participating registered children will receive adidas gifts and prizes and have the chance to meet and learn from elite athletes lining up in the adidas Boost Boston Games.

Registration for the adidas Boost Boston Games Youth Festival is now open and available at http://www.adidasboostboston.com/events/youth-festival.php where more information including times, gift details and other FAQs are available.
